Junior Mathematical Challenge 2026

Posted: 8th May 2026

This year’s Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC) was a step beyond what we’ve seen in recent years.  The Challenge presented a number of problems where the obvious approach would not yield a solution and problems where it was hard to build on previous false starts and fresh attempts had to start all over again.  It was a noticeably higher bar this year, but reassuringly Reddiford pupils have maintained their excellent record in this competition. The JMC is a national competition aimed at Year 7 and Year 8 mathematicians. All of our Year 6 children took part in this competition, with 60% (twenty-one out of the thirty-five children) earning a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. For some context, those awards are given only to the top 50% of entrants – so our Year 6 children have done exceptionally well and are well placed to tackle the challenges of Year 7 and Year 8 mathematics in the years to come!

Twelve children earned a Bronze award, six children earned a Silver award, with Waris, Avnee and Aran all excelling, earning a Gold award for their efforts. Avnee and Aran have also been invited to the follow-on Junior Kangaroo round of the competition.

This is a fantastic reward for their hard work this year – all of the children did exceptionally well, their resilience and determination were tested, and we are tremendously proud of them all. Our thanks to their teachers who have prepared them year on year to reach such a fantastically high standard and the parents who have supported them and the School on their journey at Reddiford.

Well done, Year 6!
