Roman Day Year 3 - Friday 25th June 2010 This year saw the return to Reddiford of our Year 3 Roman Day using a long established company called 'History off the Page'. Once again it was an opportunity for the pupils and staff of Year 3 to dress in authentic Roman costumes for this very special day. The day entailed the school gym being turned into a Roman market square with a temple for worship at the centre. Around this 'busy' market square were various workshops, which included mosaic design, clay pottery, wax tablet making, ink making, olive squeezing to get oil and the apocuarary workshop where the pupils were busy being Roman doctors 'curing' various ailments. Whilst all this was going on, at moments in time a Roman 'messenger' would bring news of the dreaded Boudicca's triumphs and her final demise to the roar of the assembled crowds.
The afternoon brought forth a Roman banquet and story telling where the pupils were divided into actors, dancers, soldiers or slaves. In turn, each performed some role-play, danced or marched as legionaries around the market square, whilst the slaves served the onlooking audience with foods such as bread, cheese, olives, fruits and wine (Ribena) served in silver goblets.
This was a brilliant day, and one which both the staff and pupils enjoyed. A huge 'thank you' to the parents of Year 3 who provided such fantastic costumes for the children to wear and to the staff who also willingly donned a Roman costume for the day.
